Mitchell Community College will host “A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” on Tuesday, January 16, at 6 p.m. in Rotary Auditorium on the Statesville campus, located at 500 W. Broad Street.

Mitchell invites the public to attend with college faculty, staff, and students taking part in the program.

The college also welcomes the program’s guest speaker, Rev. Timothy L. Bates.

Rev. Bates is the pastor of two churches, Calvary and Cameron Presbyterian Church in Statesville. He currently serves on the Blanche and Julian Robertson Board, the Crosby Scholars Board, and Gordon Hospice House Ethics Board.

He served in the Army Reserves from 1989-1996. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Catawba College (1987) and a master’s degree in divinity from Hood Theological Seminary (2006).

Rev. Bates is the founder of the Trinity Soldiers, Nightcrawlers and Man Up Monday program (which volunteers in over 20 schools). He has also volunteered for Communities in School and Rowan Helping Ministries.
