Special to Iredell Free News

Power had been restored to more than 5,000 EnergyUnited members Tuesday afternoon as Winter Storm Finn moves across the Carolinas. Strong wind gusts and heavy rain have resulted in saturated ground conditions, downed trees, tree limbs and more than 60 separate outage events across the cooperative’s 19-county service area.

As of 7:20 p.m., EnergyUnited was reporting 298 outages in Iredell County among 27,390 customers (1.09%).

While crews have made significant progress, power restoration efforts may be impeded at times, as high wind speeds from 35 to 50 mph present safety challenges for cooperative linemen and support crews who are unable to complete aerial work under such conditions. However, crews remain in place across the cooperative’s service area and are completing damage assessments and repairs as weather conditions permit.

“Crews are working diligently to restore power to all members as safely and quickly as possible,” said Steve McCachern, vice president of energy delivery for EnergyUnited. ” We expect a multi-day response will be needed to complete repairs, as strong wind gusts continue into Wednesday and additional outage events are anticipated .”

Safety Tips

♦ Stay away from all downed lines. Always assume that any line on the ground or overhead is energized and deadly. Please report downed line sightings using the My EnergyHub app or by calling 1-800-522-3793 to speak with a member support specialists.

♦ Never use a portable generator indoors, due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Portable generators should only be used in well-ventilated areas, when necessary to power essential equipment.

♦ Avoid all travel if possible during the storm and avoid roads that are unsafe. In the event that our cooperative experiences any major outages, please rest assured that crews will work to restore power to all members as safely and quickly as possible.
