The Statesville Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at a residence on Stewart Court.

Officers responded to a 911 call reporting a gunshot victim at a home in the 600 block of Stewart Court about 12:25 a.m., according to an SPD news release.

After entering the home, officers found Statesville resident Richard Pledger, 52, with a gunshot wound, police said.

Despite the efforts of Iredell County EMS personnel and Statesville firefighters, Pledger succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the news release.

The SPD’s Violent Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigations Division are actively investigating the incident.
