FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Statesville man accused of firing a handgun at a vehicle during a road rage incident has been charged with a felony and two misdemeanors.

Clifton Wellman

Clifton Lamont Wellman, 49, was charged with discharging a weapon into occupied property, misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor discharging a firearm in city limits.

He was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center around 8:30 p.m. after being medically cleared by the staff at Iredell Memorial Hospital. A magistrate ordered Wellman held without bond pending his first court appearance.

The suspect was taken into custody about 6 p.m., less than four hours after a woman said he followed her and her daughter to the parking lot of the National Guard Armory off Hartness Road and fired several rounds from handgun in the direction of her vehicle. Police said one round struck the vehicle, but no injuries were reported.

After the incident Wellman drove to his home at 222 Fieldstone Circle. Officers arrived at the residence within several minutes after the victim provided a vehicle description and tag number.

The SPD Special Response Team was activated and officers surrounded the home for about three hours before Wellman surrendered and was taken into custody without incident.
