Special to IFN

Iredell Adult Day Services – a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for older adults, vulnerable groups, and their families – will kick off a new support group for caregivers with an inaugural dinner and meeting on Tuesday, March 11.

The support group is co-sponsored by the Iredell Council on Aging, a not-for-profit agency devoted to improving quality of life and maintaining independent living for Iredell’s older adults (60-plus).

The support group, called Caring Connections, will help caregivers build a community of friends and serve as a sounding board for challenges they’re facing. The group will also share information about local resources that families can tap into for additional help. Meetings will be held monthly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 11, at 5:30 p.m. at Iredell Adult Day Services (502 Brevard Street in Statesville). Dinner will be served, and there is no cost to attend. The initial meeting will be informational, organizational in nature, and will encourage attendees to get to know one another. Anyone in Iredell County who cares for a loved one is invited to attend.

Caring Connections is intended to help caregivers maintain their own health and well-being as they provide care to others. The group is designed to support people who are experiencing the following:

♦ Caring for family members or friends who are elderly or seriously ill;
♦ Going to doctors’ appointments, making meals, and picking up medications for the person in need;
♦ Having feelings of anger or sadness;
♦ Putting aside their own needs, feelings, and family members to care for someone else; and
♦ Feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities and obligations
