More than two dozen highly accomplished teachers were recognized during a recent Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education meeting.
District administrators and school board members honored 14 new National Board Certified teachers and 12 teachers who renewed their certifications through the process as prescribed by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards for 2024-2025.
National Board Certification signals to parents that a teacher is dedicated to continuous improvement and committed to high standards in the classroom.
“This is a great accomplishment and recognizes you for the high quality of your classroom practices,” said I-SS Executive Director of Human Resources Jill Parker.
Newly certified teachers are:
• Tracy Skeens, Crossroads Arts and Science Early College;
• Isaac Richardson, Lakeshore Middle School;
• Amanda Moore, Third Creek Middle School;
• Jennifer Todd, Scotts Elementary School;
• Lindsey Mehall, NB Mills Elementary School;
• Stephen Lursen, Lakeshore Middle School;
• Adrian Bowie, Woodland Heights Elementary School;
• Jennifer Johnson, East Iredell Elementary School;
• Johnna Thompson, Troutman Elementary School;
• Allison Kaufman, Woodland Heights Elementary School;
• Bonnie Estes, South Iredell High School;
• Luisa Kennedy, East Iredell Elementary School;
• Sandy Freitas, Lakeshore middle School; and
• Tanya Topazio, Career Academy and Technical School

According to the NBPTS website, National Board-Certified teacher certificate signifies a high level of teaching competency achieved through a rigorous, voluntary process that demonstrates a deep understanding of best practices in their subject area, often resulting in improved student learning outcomes and increased respect within the education field compared to teachers without this certification.
Studies show that students taught by National Board Certified teachers tend to perform better academically, especially in areas like critical thinking and problem-solving.
