A Statesville woman was killed in a crash at the intersection of Old Mocksville Road and Jane Sowers Road late Thursday afternoon.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol reported that Sonia Guadalupe Cesar Ponce, 50, sustained fatal injuries in the crash about 4:50 p.m. Thursday. 

Ponce was operating a 2000 Saturn sedan traveling east on Jane Sowers Road when she attempted to turn left from a stop sign onto Old Mocksville Road and turned in front of a southbound 2011 Ford F-150, causing the crash, according to an NCSHP news release.

The driver of the Ford, Jaxson Carroll Halsey, 16, of Statesville, was transported by Iredell County EMS to an area hospital with minor injuries.

The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed to be contributing factors, and no charges have been filed in the case at this time.

During the investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
