A successful 2025 Iredell County Agricultural Fair is helping 15 students with college expenses.
Two of the 15 scholarships the Statesville Kiwanis Club will award in the next few months were presented at the club’s meeting last week.
Isabella Gallyon and Andrew Harris were the first recipients of the $2,000 scholarships. They are the grandchildren of one current member and one member who has passed away.
Gallyon, who will graduate from South Iredell High School, is the granddaughter of past president Chuck Gallyon. Andrew Harris, who will soon graduate from Statesville High School is the grandson of the late Silas Harris, a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club.
Joe Stephens, scholarship chairman for the Kiwanis, said deciding on this year’s recipients was tough.
“It was not an easy choice,” he said. “We had applications from all of the high schools except for one.”
The money awarded for scholarships each year comes from proceeds from the annual fair.
“We had a great year,” Stephens said.
The Kiwanis Club sponsors the agricultural fair and this year will be the 90th county fair.
Gallyon will attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and Harris will be going to Western Carolina University.
In the coming months, the remaining 13 recipients will receive their scholarships from the club.
Stephens called the awarding of scholarships one of the favorite times of year for the Kiwanis Club.
