The Statesville Woman’s Club (SWC) recently held a college shower for the 2026 Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship Kimberly Nunez. In addition to being this year’s scholarship winner, Nunez was also the district winner and state runner-up. She is from Statesville and the daughter of Juan and Maria Nunez.

During the May meeting, the following awards from the state convention were presented:
• President and Director of Junior Clubs’ Special Project – General Club ($1,000 for Insomniacs Inc. Hipknotics scholarship);
• Net Increase in Membership;
• Overall Winner – Large Club – Membership;
• Overall Club Creativity Winner – GFWC Signature Program, Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention;
• Honor Club – Silver;
• Membership Top Ten Projects: SWC Member Spotlight – Membership Monday & Federation Friday; and
• Top Ten Projects for GFWC Signature Program, Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention: Partnership with Mitchell Community College – Raising Awareness

District II Awards which the club is apart of
• Increase in District Membership; and
• District Honor Club Award

Service Awards

Club members honores for their years of service include Pat Smith (50 years); Joyce Johnson (40 years); Kim Mulrey (35 years); Deena Chambers (30 years); and Deneen Wells (15 years).

Presentations

During the meeting, SWC President Kim Mulrey officially presented the GFWC of NC President & Director of Junior Clubs’ Special Project – General Club $1,000 scholarship check to Insomniacs Inc. for Hipknotics. Tevin Carr, Insomniacs Inc. executive director, and Capra Harris, Insomniacs Inc. associate director for people and culture, accepted the check.

Past President Linda Lavinder also received Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO) 7th Century and 8th Century certificates. ESO is an honorary educational society that is federation-supported and open to all club members. Each century represents 100 books read.

NEXT MEETING

The next club meeting will be on Thursday, June 4, at the historic clubhouse located at 515 West End Avenue. There will be a time of Social Fellowship at 5:30 p.m. and Meeting at 6:00 p.m. This will be the last meeting before summer break and will be a fiscal year-end meeting and installation of officers. The club will welcome Cindy Hewitt, NC President, as the installing officer. Reservations are requested for an adequate head count by Monday, June 1, at 6 p.m. contact SWC member Fran Baker at 704-880-7068 to RSVP.
