Special to IFN
In response to the drought conditions across the region, the Town of Mooresville announced Friday that it is implementing mandatory water use restrictions, effective May 8. These restrictions follow Stage 2 Low Inflow Protocol (LIP) guidance from the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (CW-DMAG).
Residents and businesses that are within the town limits and connected to the town’s water system must comply with the following mandatory Stage 2 water conservation rules set by the Town’s emergency water conservation ordinance:
Irrigation
♦ Irrigation using sprinkler systems is limited to 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.; and 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
♦ Outside of these hours, all sprinkler use is prohibited. Violations may result in fines on your utility bill and potential loss of service:
- Residential: $100 per violation
- Commercial: $200 for first violation, $500 for second violation, and $1,000 for additional violations
The Town of Mooresville is asking its residents to continue conserving water by avoiding the watering of yards and plants between sunrise and sunset, taking shorter showers, running full loads of laundry and dishes, checking for inside and outside water leaks, and limiting vehicle washing and power washing of exterior surfaces.
The following is still allowed under Stage 2:
- Watering of plants and inventory by commercial plant nurseries and similar businesses
- Hand watering methods, including drip irrigation systems and handheld hoses with automatic shutoff nozzles
Stage 2 conservation rules also apply to the Town of Mooresville, which is committed to reducing its overall water usage during this time. However, the following town facilities are not subject to restrictions due to their water sources:
- Mooresville Golf Club, which is irrigated from onsite pond;
- Mazeppa Park baseball fields, which are irrigated by a well system; and
- Liberty Park splash pad, which uses its own recycled water tank
Residents on private wells within town limits also are not subject to these restrictions. For those residents, the town will offer free signage to post in their yards that indicate they are on a private system to avoid confusion and accidental enforcement.
The goal for Stage 2 is to reduce water usage by 5 to 10 percent (or more) from the amount that would otherwise be expected during normal conditions.
The CW-DMAG was established in 2006 to monitor drought status and to recommend coordinated actions for CW-DMAG members of which the Town of Mooresville is a member.
