William Garfield Brown, 84, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born in Iredell County on October 17, 1936, he was the son of the late Clarence Brown and Mary Sherrill Brown.

He graduated from Morningside High School, where he held many records as quarterback of the football team and played basketball.

For over twenty years, William lived in Winchester, N.Y., and while living there, he worked as a truck driver. He later returned to his hometown of Statesville and retired from Iredell-Statesville Schools, having worked as a custodian at Brawley Middle School.

Those left to cherish his memory are his bride of 51 years, Bettye Davis Brown; son, William Gerald Brown; daughter, Rhonda Suzette Greenfield; one sister, Lucy Brown Moore; two brothers, Daniel (Frances) Brown and Paul (Kathy) Brown. He is further survived by two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three special friends, Robert Foster, Jay Lee Howell and James Brown.

Mr. Brown will lie in state Wednesday, January 6, 2021, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 464 Garfield Street Statesville, N.C., with burial following at Iredell Memorial Gardens.
