Dorisia “Doris” Green Burks of Statesville, N.C., was called home on August 12, 2022, where she was greeted by her husband Edward Burks. She was born January 30, 1933, in West Virginia to the late Clinton and Geneva Green.

Doris was also preceded in death by her son, Dwight Burks; sister, Jean Toothman; and brothers, Don, Paul, Clayton and Kenneth Green.

She leaves behind her love of reading as it was instilled in all of her children and grandchildren. Also, her love of travel, having not left the state of West Virginia until she was in the eighth grade. She made up for it by traveling to all the lower 48 states and Alaska. She also traveled through Canada and to France.

Although Mom didn’t grow up playing sports, she dearly loved them. She would tell you she spent more time at practices and games than anything else she did, having four boys who played any and all sports. She was an avid college sports fan and loved her some UNC basketball. Well, actually she loved all sports and would watch on TV if it was on.

Mothers of sons earn a special place in Heaven and Mom really earned hers the hard way by sending all four into the Military — one each to the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. She was equally proud of us and stayed neutral on which one was the best by not picking sides. But if you ask us, it was the one that we served in.

Mom was a stay-at-home Mom and ran a home Day Care. Sometimes it feels like she kept and loved on half of the children in Iredell County.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, David (Margaret) from Bennettsville, S.C., Adrian (Amye) of Statesville, N..C, Eric (Genet) of Statesville, N.C.; and Daughter-in-Love Jackie Mccoy Burks of Statesville, N.C.; one brother, Vernon (Avanell) Green of Harmony, N.C.; and a sister, Erma Woods of Candler, N.C. She also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thanks goes out to the Gardens of Statesville and to Gordon Hospice House for taking great care of our Mom in her final days. A huge Thank you to Ebenezer Fire Department as they all made many trips to her house.

Nicholson Funeral Home is attending to her needs. The viewing will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at Fairview Baptist Church, where she was a member. A 2 p.m. service will follow led by Pastor Scott Eanes and Pastor Paul Hill. Burial will take place afterwards in the church cemetery.

Instead of flowers, please donate to Ebenezer Fire Department and/or Gordon Hospice House.

We want to leave you with a little bit of Mom with what she always told her Grandchildren. “I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck! Oh, Lordy I do!”

Please help us honor our Mom and wear Pink on Tuesday whether you can join us or not!

Nicholson Funeral Home is serving the family.
