Duncan Dallas McDuffie, 94, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2023, surrounded by family at Senior Retreat – Park Crossing, his home for the last year.

Born June 11, 1928, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the son of Colonel Jasper “Jack” Kemper McDuffie and Elizabeth Cameron (née Hoofnagle) McDuffie, he spent his formative years living wherever the Army sent his dad. After graduating from The Citadel, marrying, and having children, Duncan settled down in the Charlotte area and worked for Southern Bell. Retirement and his second marriage took him to Mooresville, where he and the love of his life, the late Mary White McDuffie, enjoyed a house on Lake Norman, fishing, boating, playing bridge and other table games, golfing, watching and photographing birds, and entertaining their extended family and friends. They were very active with their church family at St. Mark’s Lutheran in Mooresville. Duncan also served 28 years with the Lion’s Club, including many years as secretary. He and Mary had a real passion for traveling and were always on the go.

In addition to his parents and second wife, Duncan was preceded in death by his sisters and their husbands, Anne and “Mac” McCullough, and Jackie and Bill Aull; and his first wife, June Moore Smith.

He is survived by his children, Susan Pechar (Mike) of Matthews, N.C., Mary Cary of Indian Land, S.C., and Archer Kitchings (Duane) of St. Matthews, S.C.; stepchildren, Diane McCauley (Ron) of Mooresville, N.C., René Griffin (Gary-deceased) of Matthews, N.C., Jeffrey LeClair (Sabrina) of Weddington, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

The family is grateful for the care and dedication given to our father by Hospice Nurse Kya Lee Herron and his caregivers, Tonya, Symone, Amanda, Rashida, Sharon, and other staff at Senior Retreat.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 25, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. with a service following at 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Mooresville, with Pastor Dave Keck officiating.
