Ms. Ethel Lucille Sloan, 94, of Statesville, N.C., departed this life on Saturday, December 24, 2023, at Bermuda Run Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Advance, N.C. She was born on December 30, 1928, in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late Rodney Sloan and Mattie Westmorland Sloan.

She attended school in Iredell County and moved to Detroit, Mich., in her early adult years. She was a loving caregiver to her niece Sandy Mayhew. She worked for various security firms and hospitals during her time in Detroit.

Ethel was a faithful member of Shepherd’s Church of God in Mooresville, N.C., until her health declined. Before her retirement in Statesville, Ethel worked for Wilson Security and Iredell Memorial Hospital in the Dietary Department. Ethel loved the Lord, singing in church as well as with her family. Her favorite past time was conducting Bible study at Iredell Memorial Hospital and area nursing homes. She enjoyed writing books and sharing them with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Sam Sloan, Gene Sloan, Rev. Price Sloan, Glen Sloan, and Paul Sloan; and sisters, Elnora Sloan Carr, Louise Morrison, Annie Ramsey, Billy McMillian and Charlene Houston.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life a loving niece and caregiver, Melvina Ijames; a special God daughter, Clarissa Woods of Detroit Mich.; an awesome neighbor, Brenda Mack; and a special friend, Estelle Chappelle; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life services will be conducted Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. at the Mary B. Bigham Memorial Chapel of Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, 603 S. Center Street, Statesville, N.C. Rev. Chester Sanders will eulogize. Ms. Sloan will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, where members of the family will receive friends from 12 until 12:30 p.m., but will assemble at the residence of Mrs. Deborah Walker, 157 Dorothy Lane, Mooresville, N.C., at other times.
