Larry Bruce Vanhoy, 86, of Mooresville, N.C., passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, after a long and courageous battle with dementia.

He was a 1954 graduate of Rockwell High School and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science. During his college years, Larry met his future wife Margie. They were married in 1959. After graduation, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army, settling in Charlotte, N.C., in 1962 after his military service was complete. He worked at Douglas Aircraft for three years before finding his career job with the City of Charlotte. His career spanned 28 years with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities, entering as a chemist, and eventually becoming the Superintendent of the Waste Water Treatment plants in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

Mr. Vanhoy was a member of Peninsula Baptist Church in Mooresville and was a previous member of Derita Baptist Church in Charlotte for over 50 years. While living in Derita, he was very active in both church and community. He was a Sunday School teacher, church deacon, senior adult choir member and served with the North Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief Organization. He also served as a Boy Scout leader, Derita Athletics Association assistant basketball coach, and a member of the Lions Club of Lake Norman. He always saw the best in individuals and treated everyone with respect. He was a great listener.

Mr. Vanhoy enjoyed his family and spent most of his retirement at home or traveling with family to the mountains of North Carolina and Virginia, or abroad. He enjoyed reading, walking, volleyball, vegetable gardening, crossword puzzles, and cooking barbeque, among many things. He always had an appetite for barbeque, foot-long hotdogs, or country ham with a Cheerwine soda.

He is survived by his dedicated wife of 64 years, Margie Vanhoy; his children, Kevin Vanhoy (Dianne), Mike Vanhoy (Julie), and Kim Moore (Mark); his grandchildren, Claire Kohler (Peter), Jordan Moore, Lydia Brown (Caleb), Josh Moore (Anna), Sara Slagle (Tyler), Viktorija Vanhoy, Josiah Moore (Adrianne), Anna Vanhoy and Bella Moore; his great grandchildren, Gabriel, Reese and Griffin; and his sister Jan Hoffman.
