Lucille “Babe” Carpenter was born in Iredell County on April 12, 1935, to the late Allen Carpenter and Flora Summers Carpenter. She departed this life on Friday, March 10, 2023.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters and a brother-in-law, Elizabeth Carpenter and Betty Turner and her husband Paul Turner; and a nephew, Terry W. Turner Sr.

She moved to Detroit, Mich., at an early age and was employed at Providence Hospital in Housekeeping and later retired there. She spent most of her time with her family in Detroit, “the Mayberrys.” Her absolute favorite hobby was bowling. Her favorite pastime after moving back to North Carolina was sitting on the deck with her poodle, “Gracie.”

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life two nieces, Barbara Turner of Winston-Salem and Paulette (Johnie) Ratcliff of Statesville; four nephews; Larry (Betty) Turner and Robin (Joann) Turner of Charlotte and Kamau Waalee and Allen Lewis Turner, both of Statesville; a godson, Edward Drakeford Jr. of Pensacola, Fla., and a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and other special relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, March 20, 2023, at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home, at 11 a.m. with Robin Turner giving the words of comfort. Burial will follow in the Freedom Presbyterian Church cemetery.
