Simon Alonzo “Sammy” Henderson, also known as the “Candy Man,” of Statesville, N.C., died Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at his home at the age of 68.

He was born in Iredell County on July 13, 1954, to the late Simon T. Henderson and Kita Marlowe Tomlin. He was also preceded in death by a step-grandson, Garret England; a sister, Judy Reese; and by his maternal grandparents, Alonzo and Ruth Marlowe.

Sammy had worked at Engineered Sintered Components as a machinist. He loved watching Gunsmoke and The Andy Griffith Show. He enjoyed shooting guns, stargazing and NFL football. Sammy loved the Lord and his family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 46 years, Beverly Frye Henderson; son, Branson Henderson (Mary); daughter, Julie Henderson Christian (Brian Johnson); four grandchildren, Jacob England, Alexis England, Gabriel Henderson, and Gus Henderson; and a step-grandchild, Jessica Gray.

A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 1:30 p.m. in the Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tony Fox officiating. Entombment will follow at 3 p.m. at Iredell Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
