Mr. Zollie Carlton Young, 63, who was affectionately known as Randy, was born in Iredell County, N.C., on February 15, 1960, to the late Clyde Joseph Young and Annie Florence Reid Young. He departed this life on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C.

Zollie graduated from Mooresville Senior High School with the Class of 1978. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, 3D AWD, Expert Badge with M16 Rifle Bar, and the Driver Badge. His hobbies included carpentry, fishing, boating, painting, cooking, and being a full-time “Pawpaw.” He was a member of St. James First Baptist Church in Mooresville, N.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Rufus Heaggans Sr.; his mother-in-law, Catherine Heaggans; a brother-in-law, Wilford Heaggans; son-in-law, Cameron Vines; an uncle, Bob Skinner; a nephew, Thurston Heaggans; and a niece, Alexandria Heaggans.

He leaves to cherish the memory of his life his wife, Sylvia Heaggans Young of the home; one son, Nicholas Ramsey of the home; one daughter, Sherelle “Nikki” Ramsey Vines of Troutman; two sisters, Stephanie Young and Beatrice Lowe, both of Mooresville; aunts and uncles, Joseph (Dorothy) Heaggans of Statesville, Robert (Alfreda) Blackwell of Troutman, John (Vernie) Smith of Cleveland, Leslie Middleton, and Gloria Skinner; godmother, Ruth Ramsey Rankin; in-laws, Derrick Arnold of Cleveland, Leonard (Mary) Heaggans of Troutman, Beverly Heaggans of Statesville, Lesia (Curtis) Pearson of Statesville, and Rufus (Annette) Heaggans Jr. of Statesville; five grandchildren, Addison Vines and Morgan Vines, both of Troutman, Natalie Ramsey of Lexington, S.C., Calynn Heaggans, and Carsyn Rose, both of Mooresville; the Heaggans family; special friends, Carolyn (Jeff) Roberts, Angela Williams, Kim Hancock, Nathan (Shelia) Johnson, Willie (Cynthia) Sturgis, Bruce (Barbara) Allison, Kim (Kaye) Anderson, and Clifford Homesley; two godchildren, Brittany Stevenson and Sydney Williams; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Thursday, May 11, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at Rutledge and Bigham Mortuary. Visitation will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Pastor Timothy Porter will be officiating, and Pastor James Shade will deliver the eulogy. A burial will follow in the National Cemetery, Salisbury at 2 p.m.
