We are saddened to announce that Donald Eugene Phillips, 73, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2024, at S. Mitchell Mack Hospice House in Mooresville, N.C. He was born May 14, 1950, in Monroe, N.C., son of the late Grace and Joe Phillips.

Don was a graduate of Monroe High School in Monroe. He was an Eagle Scout and proud of this accomplishment. He also earned his associate degree from the University of Maryland while serving in the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged as Sergeant Specialist P5 rank.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Grace Phillips of Monroe; and brother, David Phillips of Matthews, N.C.

Donald is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kay Roddey Phillips; and two children, son Brent Phillips (Rebecca) and daughter Amy Smith (Tyler); and three grandchildren, Sawyer Smith, Tinsley Smith, and Owen Phillips. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie Griffin, and brother, Darrell Phillips of Monroe. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Don was proud of his children and their accomplishments, but especially proud that they are good people. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart.

Don was a lifelong jokester, keeping everyone laughing and wondering if his stories were true. He was a hard worker, providing for his family while employed by Brown Shoe Group of St. Louis for 30 years. Don enjoyed keeping his yard immaculately manicured and the cars sparkling. His favorite pastime was that of food connoisseur. He loved those family gatherings and was always first in line. His favorite cake was pound cake made by his daughter-in-law’s grandmother. He did not like to share it — it was his. Lastly, his other loves were his “pups,” and no matter how old they were, they were his pups!

The funeral will be a private ceremony with close family members and friends present.
