James Louis Smyre, aka “Sadie” of Statesville, formally of Harmony, N.C., was born to James Filmon Smyre and Evelyn Smyre on January 19, 1939, in Olin, N.C. James departed this life on January 1, 2024, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C. He was the oldest of nine siblings.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne Smyre and Ralph Smyre.

James leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving family, which includes his wife of sixty-six years, Norma Jean Smyre of the home; his sons, James L. Smyre Jr. (Cassie) and Gregory Smyre, both of Statesville; and Samuel D. Smyre (Elaine) of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Teresa F. Jones of Statesville, and Pamela K. James of Maryland; two brothers, Roy Smyre of Harmony, N.C., and Ricky Smyre (Teresa) of Troutman, N.C.; four sisters, Jo Evelyn Summers, Betty Jean Robertson (Charlie), and Annie Smyre Eckles, all of Statesville, N.C., and Helen Byers (Leonard) of Troutman, N.C.; his last living aunt, Mildred Dobbins of Statesville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Darlene Smyre of Kannapolis, N.C.; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 4 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The family will gather at the King’s Court Community Center, 410 Kings Grant Court, Statesville, NC 29625.
