Dr. Katherine Weeks Lusch, 60, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Kathy was born on December 15, 1963, in Austin, Texas, to Michael and Pat Weeks. She was raised in Cary, N.C., and graduated from Apex High School, North Carolina State University, and the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, obtaining her MD in 1991. She did her three-year residency in family practice at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Kathy practiced medicine for 29 years in the Charlotte-Mooresville area. In 2016 she opened her own solo practice, Blue Skies Family Practice, in Mooresville. She decided to set up her own practice so she could offer her patients longer appointments and more personalized care than was possible in a practice owned by a third party.
Despite the demands of her medical career, Kathy successfully raised three sons. Adam Lusch obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from North Carolina State University. His twin brothers, Brandon and Kyle Lusch, are undergraduate students at East Carolina University.
Kathy was an avid devotee of physical fitness. Growing up, she was a year-round swimmer and avid tennis player. She continued swimming for exercise and relaxation throughout her adult life.
In addition to her three sons, Kathy is survived by her husband of 15 years, Jerry D. Slaughter; two stepchildren, Jerry A. Slaughter and Aspen Slaughter; her parents; brothers, Dr. Michael O. Weeks and Adam L. Weeks; an aunt; three cousins, a niece, a nephew, and a host of friends and former patients.
She was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Kirk Lusch.
Kathy’s funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 131 W. Council Street, Salisbury, NC 28144. A reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Kathy’s name to the Novant Health Cancer Institute, 170 Medical Park Road, Mooresville, NC 28117.
