Tommy “Barney” Franklin Barnette, 75, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024, at his residence.

He was born on April 9, 1948, in Mooresville to the late Gene and Louise Armstrong Barnette. Tommy received his associate degree from Catawba Valley Technical Institute. He was a retired heavy equipment mechanic from Mitchell Distribution Company in Charlotte and then worked at Carolina CAT for 10 years. He was a member of Shearer Presbyterian Church in Mooresville. Tommy enjoyed fishing and going to Hatteras. He always said “a day fishing even if you don’t catch anything is a day on the lake.” Tommy also enjoyed going to NASCAR races. He was a big Earnhardt fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Barnette.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janet Rodgers Barnette; children, Robert Barnette, Casey Meares and husband Alan; brothers, Ronnie Barnette and wife Donna, and Jerry Barnette and wife Sherry; grandchildren, Liliah Andrews and Sarah Barnette; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 24, at Shearer Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Stephen Stout officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the church fellowship hall.
