Dorothy “Dot” Shew, 93, of Statesville, N.C., passed away peacefully at Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation in Conover on February 1, 2025, following a period of declining health.
Dorothy was born on February 18, 1931, to the late Mr. Ruben W. Johnson and Mrs. Maggie Taylor Johnson. She grew up working on the family farm and graduated from Harmony High School with her beloved Class of 1948. On July 4, 1948, Dorothy married Glenn Shew and started a family. Dorothy worked in textiles until 1965, when she joined Glenn to start and run their family furniture business for over 30 years. In addition to raising a family and working in the family business, in later years Dorothy also enjoyed working part-time for a period as a local relief Postal Clerk / Postmaster at the Turnersburg Post Office.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Glenn Shew. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her two brothers, Bristol Reece Johnson and Robert James Johnson; and her sister, Rachel Laymon.
Dorothy is survived by her two sons, Bristol Wayne Shew (Evelyn) of Statesville and their daughter Kimberly Hartman Barkley (Rick), and Glenn Scott Shew (Lisa) of Monroe; three grandchildren, Megan Alyse Shew, Allison Shew Trull (Drew), and Dawson Scott Shew; and one great granddaughter, Saylor Kate Trull.
The family would like to thank the members of Dorothy’s Fairview Baptist Church Sunday School Class and her Harmony High School Class of 1948 for all the friendships, faithful visits, cards, and encouragements to Dorothy over the years. The family would also like to thank the staff of The Gardens of Statesville, Conover Nursing and Rehabilitation, and Amorem Hospice and Palliative Care for all the care, love, and support provided to Dorothy and her family.
The visitation and funeral for Dorothy Shew will be at Fairview Baptist Church, located 349 Turnersburg Highway, Statesville, N.C. The visitation will be on Saturday, February 8, from 10 to 11 a.m. and the funeral will follow at 11 a.m. A private entombment will follow at Iredell Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fairview Baptist Church, 349 Turnersburg Hwy., Statesville, NC 28625.

Dorothy was a true example of a selfless Christian woman. She was dedicated to God, her husband, sons, grandchildren, friends, and her church. I treasure the many memories of growing up as a neighbor of Dorothy. I know that God has surely welcomed her with open arms. Prayers to her family.
