Mr. James Weldon McClelland, 70, of Statesville, N.C., peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 6, 2025, at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born on December 24, 1954, in Detroit, Mich., he was the beloved son of the late Faye McClelland Griggs.

James was a proud graduate of Cass High School in Detroit, Mich., where he developed his passion for music and the arts. A gifted drummer and talented artist, he found joy in expressing himself through his creative pursuits. His love for life was evident in his hobbies, which included fishing, cooking, and lending a helping hand to those in need. Known as a skilled handyman, James was always ready to assist others with his generous spirit.

After dedicating many years of service, James retired from Daimler Chrysler, where he worked as an inspector. His commitment to his work and his colleagues left a lasting impact. He attended Logan Presbyterian Church in Statesville, N.C.

James leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy of love and kindness. He is survived by his two sons, Cuabeya L. Woods of Lithonia, Ga., and Quan McClelland (Falotta) of Stony Point, N.C.; one sister, Deborah L. McClelland of Statesville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Azaria N. Woods, Cayden R. Woods, Dylan Clark, Serenity Allison, and Patrick McClelland; and a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends

A celebration of James’s life will be held on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 2 p.m. at Rutledge and Bigham Mortuary in Statesville, N.C. Rev. Timothy Bates will be officiating and Rev. Bruner will deliver the eulogy. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home and burial will follow the service.

James’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His warmth, generosity, and love for his family and friends will never be forgotten.
