Alma Gene Scott Williams was born in Royston, Ga., on January 2, 1923, to Hubert Lee Scott and Gwender McWhorter Scott. The family moved to Statesville, N.C., when she was two months old. She joined Holsey Memorial C. M. E. Church at an early age and attended until her health declined. She served in the women’s Missionary Minister and the Usher Board. Alma was a Unity High School graduate, and attended Lae Mae Beauty College in Winston-Salem, N.C.
On August 25, 1944, she married the love of her life, Willie “Bill” Maceo Williams. Their union produced five children, whom she treasured and nurtured with every fiber of her being. Caregiving was her calling.
In addition to her immediate family, including her parents, her husband, and her children, she provided comfort and aid to friends and extended family members. Sometimes this was in the form of meals, transportation to doctor appointments, housekeeping, visits to nursing homes, or supportive phone calls. Everyone knew she was an excellent cook, and many benefitted from her bountiful dinners and desserts. She was also known for her tremendous energy. She danced in heels at her 100th birthday party and challenged her grandchildren to sit-ups in her 90s.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, a daughter Janice Annette Williams Bailey, a son-in-law Ernest Kelly Bailey, and four siblings, Jamie Scott Jones, James Jessie Scott, Willie Lee Scott Franklin, and Ella Mae Scott Gray.
Left to cherish her beautiful memory are her daughters, Gloria W. (Johnny) Brown and Jeanita “Nita” Gray, both of Raleigh, Willie “Billy” (Rhonda) Williams Jr. and G. Keith Williams, both of Statesville; brother, Theo “Babe” Scott of New York, N.Y.; eleven grandchildren, Stephanie Brown, Nicholle Jackson, Scott Brown, Marcus Williams, Keishia Conner, Brian Bailey, Christopher Williams, Gerren Williams, Brandon Gray, Brien Gray, and Kiera Gray; sixteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Also, a special goddaughter, who lovingly assisted with her care for the past year, Swyzanne “Sway” Willoughby of Raleigh.
We extend our sincere gratitude to the nurses at Amedisys Palliative and Hospice Home Care, who provided immeasurable services and support during her final months.
Rutledge & Bigham Funeral Home is serving the family.
