
Gayle Eugene Speaks, 87, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026. Born July 23, 1938, in Statesville, N.C., Gayle was the son of Isom Turner Speaks and Olivia Louise Plyler Speaks. He graduated from Statesville High School. Gayle was preceded in death by his parents and his longtime devoted companion, Mary Cole. Gayle is survived by his two children, Stefanie Speaks and Jack Speaks. He is also survived by his nephews, Tom Speaks and Jon Speaks.
Gayle grew up in Statesville and won three North Carolina state wrestling championships and took these gifts with him to Appalachian State University. He continued his wrestling career when he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he proudly served for two years and wrestled across the world. After his service to his country, Gayle became a horseman with his favorite horse named Kellytuck Abner. They traveled from Florida to Maryland as best of friends. Gayle was also an excellent salesman and won many salesmanship awards over the years. His smile and charming demeanor allowed him to excel in any type of business environment. The last 35 years of his life were spent in Durham, N.C., with Mary Cole, who was the love of his life. He and Mary loved to be around family and others socializing and having fun. Gayle was also a confident and talented shagger, competing in numerous beach music competitions. He also had a love for singing and would sing for his neighbors on special occasions.
Gayle loved his country and this was exemplified by him singing “God bless the USA” multiple times later in his life. Gayle will be missed by many. Per Gayle‘s wishes there will be no memorial service.
Memorials may be given to the charity of one’s choice.
