The Statesville Police Department is investigating an accident that claimed the life of a 2-year-old boy on Fifth Street earlier this week

Officers responded to the scene of the accident in the 1000 block of Fifth Street around 5:54 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, according to an SPD news release.

Two-year-old Desmond Hayes was hit by a 2010 Ford Taurus operated by Marilyn Corpening, police said. The child was transported to Davis Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police delayed releasing information about the accident at the request of the child’s family.
