First responders work to extricate the pilot of a small that crashed near Troutman on Sunday.

A Mooresville man was fatally injured on Sunday afternoon when the small plane he was piloting crashed while attempting to land at Lake Norman Airport.

The N.C. State Highway Patrol identified the pilot as Randy Mysliviec.

First responders responded to a report of a small plane crash on Adrian Lane near Troutman about 12:16 p.m. Sunday.

Personnel from Troutman Fire-Rescue, Mooresville Fire-Rescue and Shepherds Fire-Rescue, along with Iredell County EMS, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and the N.C. State Highway Patrol all responded to multiple reports. 

First responders confirmed that the small plane hit several trees and crashed into the site of an abandoned home.

The pilot was trapped in the plane. Crews used hydraulic tools and cutters to extricate Mysliviec, who was transported to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center by Iredell County EMS. The pilot succumbed from his injuries at the hospital.

The FAA will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
