South River Baptist Church held its third annual barbecue fundraiser Thursday.

Pastor Scott Townsell and church members grilled the chicken and prepared the 3,000 meals for the event, which raises money for Headwaters Academy.

“Usually, we always sell out,” said Kim Williams, Headwaters administrator, technology & media coordinator. “This fundraiser helps the keep our school’s tuition low,” Williams shared.

Olin resident Debbie Prevette picked up 68 boxes. Sixty were going to feed hungry community members.
Her daughter Jessica sold 60 tickets to three businesses who sponsored the families.

“They didn’t want the plates themselves, so asked Jessica to find them needy homes,” she shared.

Pastors from Harmony Baptist Church and Mount Vernon Baptist Church, along with a bus driver for a Latino church in Harmony, all stepped up to help.

Keith Cannon, whose 16-year-old son Bryson attends Headwaters, appreciates the fundraiser.

Each student is given a minimal of 10 tickets to sell so they can take ownership for their part.

Bryson sold 21 plates.

“They’ve got a good thing going here,” Cannon said. “It helps tremendously with the tuition.”
