A 16-year-old suspect has been detained in connection with the shooting of a 13-year-old in Statesville on Tuesday evening.

Officers were dispatched for a report of a shooting in the 600 block of Crescent Lane about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Statesville Police Department news release. 

Responding officers located a 13-year-old juvenile suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said.

Immediate medical care was administered on the scene, and the victim was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for further treatment. The victim was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning.

During the ensuing investigation, officers identified a 16-year-old juvenile as the suspect, according to the news release.

A search warrant was executed at the suspect’s residence, where the 16-year-old was located and taken into custody, police said.. The Department of Juvenile Justice was contacted and has issued a secure custody order for attempted murder.
