Shepherds Fire Department and Mooresville Fire-Rescue personnel, along with N.C. Forestry Service crews, were dispatched for a grass/woods fire on Mt. Ulla Highway about 4:09 p.m. on Sunday. Responding units advised there was heavy smoke in the area. Mooresville Ladder 6 was first on the scene and reported a large mulch pile and a wooded area were on fire. A call for additional tankers and brush trucks from both departments was transmitted, along with a request for assistance from South Iredell and Mount Mourne fire departments. Heavy machinery was used to make fire breaks and provide the firefighters access to fires deep in the woods. No injuries were reported. Crews remained on scene for hours hitting hot spots and assisting Forestry Service units.
