A motorcyclist was fatally injured Friday evening in a head-on collision in northern Iredell County.

According to the N.C. State Highway Patrol, Michael Alan Gandy, 57, was traveling north on Whites Farm Road near Ingram Road on his Kawasaki motorcycle when a southbound SUV crossed the center line and hit the motorcycle. Gandy died from his injuries at the scene of the crash, troopers said in a news release.

The driver of the Ford Edge, a 17-year-old whose name was not released by the NCSHP, was not injured.

The initial investigation indicates that excessive speed contributed to the collision, according to the news release.

Charges are pending against the juvenile after consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, troopers said.
