Iredell County Public Library Community Engagement Librarian Jenny Levins-Hertal and Youth Services Manager Kelli Goodwin were the guest speakers at the Statesville Woman’s Club’s April meeting.
Levins-Hertal and Goodwin shared how the ICPL has free programs at all three of its locations. This includes the Summer Reading Program, which started as an effort to help students retain the skills they have learned during the academic year. The program has expanded to include adults. Kits that encourage reading, along with an activity or craft related to the reading, are also available at all three ICPL locations. The library staff put together more than 3,400 kits for this year’s program. Brian Summers with Iredell Friends of the Library told members that the ICPL and bookmobile made an impact on his life. He also acknowledged the contributions that the Statesville Woman’s Club made to efforts to establish the city’s first library.
The club and members gave a donation to help with purchasing supplies for the Summer Reading Program.
Scholarship Winner recognized

Members also welcomed the 2026 Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship (SSCS) winner and runner up. South Iredell High School senior Kimberly Nunez is this year’s SWC and District scholarship winner. She is from Statesville and is the daughter of Juan and Maria Nunez. The runner-up is North Iredell High School senior Ella Webb. She is from Harmony and the daughter of Marcus and Jennifer Webb. The winners were joined by their older sisters, Trinity Webb and Natalie Nunez, who are previous scholarship winners.
Child Abuse Prevention
To bring awareness to Prevent Child Abuse Month “Pinwheels for Prevention” were placed on display on the club’s front lawn in conjunction with the efforts of Pharos Parenting. Pinwheels represent the happy, carefree childhood we want for every child. Pharos Parenting helps parents learn effective parenting skills, develop confidence in those skills and create stronger families.

The next club meeting will be Thursday, May 7, at the historic clubhouse located at 515 West End Avenue. There will be a short business meeting at 5:30 p.m. followed by Social Fellowship and a “College Shower” for scholarship winner Kimberly Nunez.
