We are absolutely heart broken to tell everyone that Peter Coerte Voorhees, born in Elmira, N.Y., on August 8, 1962, has passed away suddenly on December 1, 2020.

Peter was a legendary character and beloved husband to Karen and unconditionally loved his daughter Lauren. He was predeceased by his loving parents, Barbara Ann Hall Voorhees and Charles Hammell Voorhees. He is leaving five amazing sisters (Martha, Nancy, Ann, Beth, and Peggy), many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces, great nephews, brother fire-fighters, and countless friends.

Peter had earned his associates degree in Fire Fighting Technology. He worked in 911 telecommunications, operated his own fencing and erosion company, sold fire equipment at LaFrance, and most recently was successful as a fence warehouse manager and salesman.

He, along with his boisterous laugh and his never ending jokes will be greatly missed by us all. He was beyond fun to be with, which was almost equal to his difficulty to live with.

He was a lifetime member of Southport Fire Department and it is there that his heart and soul resides with his brother firefighters who assisted him in the raising of Lauren and taught her the life skills of penny poker and beer pouring. The love for that fire department has never faded, and neither will ours.

His dream was to become a gentleman farmer like his father before him. He loved to garden, cook, grill, feed and entertain everyone. Most of all, he loved the fire service and his family.

Memorial services are to be planned in the near future in Elmira, N.Y.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the Voorhees family. Condolences may be made to the family at www.cavin-cook.com.
