Loyce Donald “Donnie” Baker, 65, of Mooresville, N.C., and formerly of Wilson, N.C., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

Born July 25, 1956, he was the son of the late Loyce Darden Baker and Sybil Scott Baker. Donnie’s early career was in NASCAR, where he worked as an engine builder and member of the pit crew for Dale Earnhardt Sr. When he left racing, Donnie translated his love of cars into a love of trucks. He spent 30 years behind the wheel of a Peterbilt before hanging up his keys to run his own trucking and freight logistics companies, where he helped many owner-operators over the years get off the road and make a living driving locally so they could be home with their families.

Donnie put love and care into everything he did. It was his relationships he built with his customers and drivers and the thought and care he put into every load for both parties that made him a success.

Donnie dispatched each driver the way he wished he would have been when he was driving, always putting fairness and love into the way he handled every day.

Donnie attended Christ Community Church in Huntersville, where he was baptized in July 2020, and most recently also attended The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, always with his wife by his side. He was a man on fire for The Lord and passionate about sharing Jesus Christ.

Donnie also loved driving his Corvette and spending hours at Jet Fitness working out and sharing the gospel with the young men that looked to him as a father figure. He loved spending time with his family and his children were the light of his life.

Donnie is survived by his family, whom he loved so much, his wife, Lorna Moon; sons, Donald Philip Baker (Brittany Lindsay), Dylan Scott Baker and Josh Weekly; daughter, Jessica Baker Fischer (Lawrence); grandson, Eli Weekly; brothers, Ricky Baker and Dennis Baker (Tammy); sister, Debra White (Bobby); nieces, Sarah Simon and Jordan Baker; and nephew, Brandon Baker.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, with a prayer service being held at 6 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Community Church in Huntersville or Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mooresville.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the Baker family. Condolences may be made to the family at www.cavin-cook.com.
