Barbara Ann Jones Shutt was born a coal miner’s daughter in the home of her beloved Grandpa Ashley in Warrensville, N.C., on October 10, 1936.

Spending her childhood years in Ashe County, N.C., and Wyoming County, W.Va., the mountains always held a special place in her heart. Her fondest memories are the fragrances of the mountain flora and her Grandpa’s apple orchards, the sounds of the trickling water of Buffalo Creek, and life in those simpler old mountain times.

Barbara passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2023, surrounded by family and love, after losing her health to an incurable illness. She was extremely grateful to her doctor, Ishmael Hayfron, for the care that he provided and for always telling her the truth.

She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Kelly Suzanne; her parents, Thelma and Raymond Jones; her brother, Ervel Jones; her first grandchild, Ashley Brooke; and a great-grandchild angel.

She is survived by her eldest daughter, Konni Ann; her Sunshine and Starbright granddaughters, Ashlyn and Jessica; her three great-grandsons who were her heart, Jaxon (her Bunny Boy), Brody and Trenton; and her dearest niece and nephew who were more like children to her, Jeannie and Jeff Jones.

The family will receive friends and loved ones in a small gathering at Bunch-Johnson Funeral home on January 12, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m.

True to her selfless, giving nature until the end, Barbara asked us, in lieu of a memorial service, to send donations to the two charities that she contributed to every month for many years: St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Samaritan’s Purse. The family asks anyone who wishes to offer condolences or remembrances for Barbara to find a charity that you care about and “Go and do likewise.”
