Mrs. Julia Matilda Jones Powers, 99, was born in Iredell County on November 3, 1923, to the late Luther Eckles and Sarah Holland Jones. She departed this life on Monday, September 4, 2023, at her residence.

Julia attended school at the Catawba Rosenwald School in Catawba, N.C. She was at one time employed as a cook for the Country Kitchen at the Statesville Auto Auction. Julia was a devoted member of the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, where she served in many areas, including Senior Choir, Past President, Assistant Leader, Missionary Circle, Sunday School, and Nurse. She was also a member of the Elks Sklyland Banner Lodge and the Garfield Street Senior Citizens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Leroy Powers; and her stepfather, Sidney Jones.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life a son, Charles Edward Jones of Springfield, Mass.; two grandchildren, Terrell Dewberry and Jahkya Toles, both of Springfield, Mass.; a special niece, Capriel Shevonne Summers; a special nephew, Ryan Jones of Charlotte, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews; other relatives, church family, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Pastor Dale Gibson will be officiating the service.
