Mr. Nathan Brown Wood, 78, was born in Rowan County, N.C., on October 3, 1944, to the late John Wesley Wood Sr. and Annie Mae Berrie Wood. He departed this life on Monday, May 22, 2023, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C.

Nathan was one of ten children and attended school at Amity Hill Elementary and Unity High School in Statesville, N.C. He worked for Iredell Memorial Hospital as a dishwasher, but had a dream of a better life. Nathan moved on to work at the Sanitation Department for the City of Statesville for 35 years and also did a side job as a repairman. After retiring he became known as the “go to man.” He loved to travel to Rochester, N.Y., for vacation so he could help out his sister. His favorite activities included playing checkers, going to yard sales, WSIC Home Ads, and playing cards. He always wanted to be the King when he played. He also enjoyed fishing, fixing appliances, and going to flea markets, but most of all he enjoyed making friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tanza Wood; one stepson, Robert Ferguson; four brothers, John Wesley Wood Jr., James Alfred Wood, Franklin Wellie Wood, and Howard Wood; and one sister, Bessie Mae Wood Price.

He leaves to cherish the memory of his life, his wife, Bertha Wood of the home; stepson, Marcus Ferguson, and Peanut of the home; two brothers, Bishop Ralph Wood and wife, and Mason M. Wood; one sister, Beverly L. Wood; two grandchildren; six great grandchildren; a step-granddaughter, Chaquan Raquel; sisters-in-law, Marilyn (Herman) Caple, Cynthia (James) Bowman, Beverly Mattox, and Lillian Wood; brothers-in-law, Carl Christen Ferguson, Clyde Ferguson, and Scotland Ferguson; goddaughter, Lisa Tate; and special friend, Stacie Freeman; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at 3 p.m. at Rutledge & Bigham Mortuary. Visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery.
