Reda Faye Weatherman Jurney was called home on Saturday, December 2, 2023. She was 93. Born May 15, 1930, in Yadkin County, N.C., along with her twin sister Freda, she was the daughter of Wade Lee and Electa Johnson Weatherman.

She was one of 12 siblings, including three brothers and nine sisters. All but the youngest, Ulala, preceded her in death. She was married for 69 years to Roy Houston Jurney, who passed away in 2019. They lived in Statesville since 1956 and had four children, who gave them six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Their children are Sheila Freeman, Pamela Frazier, Danny Jurney (Cindy) and Scott Jurney. Grandchildren are Kristina Hall (Will), Richard Freeman, Sonja Becknell (Ryan), Josh Frazier, Jusstin Jurney (Maggie), and Jessica Bedenbaugh (Michael). Great grandchildren are Ava Hall, Owen Becknell, Nora Becknell, Troy Jurney, Drake Bedenbaugh, Jacob Bedenbaugh and Drew Bedenbaugh.

Reda and Roy were charter members of Oakdale Baptist Church. Reda was very active in church functions and was a leader in keeping the church decorated for the holidays, especially Christmas. She had a special touch for things like that. She was a member of the Oakdale Club, which shared cooking skills, flower arranging and home decorating among other mutual interests. She and her friends formed their own Rook Club and rotated meetings at each other’s homes, bringing food, love and laughter each week. It was a tight, fun group that others would’ve loved to be a part of. (There was only room for two tables.)

Reda was a star basketball player for Union Grove School. As a tribute to her outstanding performance, her school retired her jersey (#5). After graduating, she went on to play for Hanes Hosiery. Sadly, the team disbanded the year before going to the Olympics. Her love for basketball never diminished. She was a big fan of all our North Carolina collegiate teams and the Charlotte Hornets.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Daniels officiating. Entombment will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will visit friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Oakdale Baptist Church, 585 Mocksville Highway, Statesville, NC 28625.

Nicholson Funeral Home is honored to serve the Jurney family.
