Sarah A. Perkon, 87, of Statesville, N.C., passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. She was born in Cuba on April 18, 1936, the oldest of four siblings. She married in 1960 to an American traveler who wanted to marry her from the first time they met. She was a beautiful Spanish senorita. She left Cuba and made her new home in Erie, Pa., where she and husband Richard raised their family. Later, as age took its toll, she moved to sunny North Carolina, where she could have some help from her daughter living there.

Sarah was a talented artist as well as a skilled seamstress. She particularly enjoyed flower gardening, interior decorating, art collecting and shiny jewelry, which she was well known for. She loved her family, animals, children, and her many friends, hugging and kissing people, leaving a trail of lipstick wherever she went. She was also a long-time member of the Asbury Woods Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Erie.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings and her husband Richard Perkon.

She is survived by her three daughters, Lenore Yurkovich of Allen Texas, Janet Horoschuck and husband Michael of Statesville, N.C., and Tonette Ciano of Stow, Ohio; three grandchildren, Nicholas Yurkovich and wife Alecia, Chelsea Yurkovich and Roman Ciano; and two great-grandchildren, Fallon and Grayson Yurkovich; as well as a nephew, Jorge Oliva.

Many thanks to her beloved caregiver, Chastity Warren, and to Hospice of Iredell County. We couldn’t have done it without you!

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Nicholson Funeral Home has the honor of serving the family.
