Sylvia Diane Heaggans Young, 62, was born on July 15, 1961, at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville, N.C., to the late Rufus Sr. and Catherine Miller Heaggans. She entered her heavenly home on Monday, April 15, 2024. In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, Zollie Young; twins, Novolya and Darlene Heaggans; brother, Wilford Heaggans Sr.; niece, Alexandria Heaggans; nephew, Thurston Heaggans, and best friend, Angela Wallace Williams.

Sylvia graduated from South Iredell High School on June 8, 1979. The baby girl of her siblings, she grew up singing with her family and making memories that she shared with others often. To spend time with her was to end up laughing at some funny story from childhood. She loved to read Western books and watch old Westerns on television. Sylvia loved good music, fellowship, and participated in chorus while in school as well as church.

Sylvia has always been a hard worker and a family girl. Her heart for service and love of family was unwavering. Over the years, she worked at Bali, Burlington Industries, Hunt Corporation, and Umar, and she retired from Mooresville Graded School District as a teacher assistant and bus driver in 2018.

On November 15, 1997, she married the love of her life, Zollie “Randy” Young. She loved being Randy’s wife (and smiled when he affectionately called her “Peanut”), a mother to her children, and “Nanny” to her three favorite little girls. She poured love into each minute spent with them.

For over a decade she fought and conquered breast cancer, multiple myeloma, and other health issues, all the while continuing to serve others in her church, community, and workplace with a giving heart and warm smile. She was a faithful and lifelong member of Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, N.C., where she served as a member of the Cathedral Choir, the Deacon Board, and Presbyterian Women Circle II. She loved the Lord and trusted his will for her life above all else.

She leaves to cherish the memory of her life two children, Shere’lle “Nikki” Vines and Nicholas Ramsey; three grandchildren, Addison Vines, Morgan Vines, and Natalie Ramsey; honorary grandchildren, Calynn Heaggans and Carsyn Rose; five siblings, Derrick Arnold, Leonard (Mary) Heaggans, Beverly Heaggans, Lesia (Curtis) Pearson, and Rufus Jr. (Annette) Heaggans; seven nephews, Jeremy (Anna) Heaggans, Rodney Wilson, Detrick Heaggans, Wilford (Kisha) Heaggans Jr., Thurmond (Kishina) Heaggans, David (Frances) Jones, and Rahim Pearson; niece, Kimberly (Mason) Wood; two uncles, Joseph (Dorothy) Heaggans and George Stevenson; four aunts, Patricia Walls, Alfredia (Bob) Blackwell, Vernie (John) Smith, and Melzetta Heaggans; two god children, Brittany Stevenson and Sydney Williams; sisters-in-law; Stephanie Young, Beatrice Lowe, and Kathy (Gerald) Miller; and brother-in-law, Clarence Ramsey, as well as a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Sylvia was beloved by many, and it was evident by the friendships and support from special friends and cousins, Rita Taggert, Sherra Mills, Shirley Black, Karen Ellis, Kaye Anderson, Belinda Henry, Judith McKee, Diane Mayfield, Elaine Grant, Donna Brown, Elecia Dobbins, Carolyn Roberts, Rita Heaggans, Tammy Kesler, Gwen Morrison, Charlette Harrill, Emily Heaggans, and her sisters of Divas Fighting Like Girls, Inc.
