The Statesville Police Department announced Friday that two men face charges in connection with a shooting that occurred in the 1300 block of Fifth Street in May.

Four people sustained gunshot wounds on May 2 and were treated for their injuries at Iredell Memorial Hospital. 

The SPD Violent Crime Unit initiated an investigation into the shooting, and identified several suspects based on evidence in the case.

On May 18, the SPD obtained an arrest warrant for Statesville resident Chavion Quane’ Smith, 20. He was apprehended by the U.S. Marshal’s Service in Greensboro on May 31 and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious Injury. Smith was released on a $1 million bond.

On June 15, the SPD obtained an arrest warrant for Charlotte resident Amontea Lester, 29. He was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals on June 22. He was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with Intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and felony conspiracy. Lester’s bond was set at $1 million. He remains in the Iredell County Detention Center.

The SPD expressed its appreciation for the work the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, the Mooresville Police Department, and the U.S. Marshal’s Service for their assistance in this investigation.
